Reflections of Africa, based
in Oxfordshire, imports quality, hand-made craft from southern Africa.
The company was born out of the African experiences of John and Rosemarie
Troughear, who, having lived amongst the indigenous people for many
years, developed a deep appreciation and love for those people and
their earthy, lively art.
Many Africans are impoverished and, as Reflections of Africa is
committed to the principle of fair trade, our direct buying from
the artists creates employment and gives them and their extended
families a livelihood from their craft.
The sculptors of metal use recycled materials, mainly used oil
drums, to create their spectacular and innovative bird
and animal designs, ranging from the enigmatic dung beetle to the
resplendent crowned crane. On completion each sculpture is either
bronzed or varnished and comes with maintenance instructions.
Recently we have seen the development of the emerging art of beaded
wire sculpture, where wire is intricately and colourfully beaded
and bent to form insects and animals.
